Bei Jiang Da Di
Winding along the banks of the Bei River in Qingyuan City, the Bei River Embankment is a rare natural wonder in Lingnan where ecology and culture harmoniously intertwine. With its gentle ripples lapping softly against the embankment, it paints a scene reminiscent of traditional Chinese ink wash painting. In spring, falling peach blossoms drift through the air; in autumn, reeds sway gracefully in the breeze. The area is also renowned far and wide for its spectacular seasonal migrations of birds. Along the riverside, an ecological corridor links wetland parks, birdwatching platforms, and cultural promenades. Willow branches trail over the water on both sides of the pathways, dotted with wildflowers, inviting visitors to either paddle leisurely on the river or sit quietly on the embankment, listening to the symphony of river waves and birdsong. Originally constructed during the Qing dynasty and renovated over successive generations, the embankment embodies the wisdom of Lingnan water management. Its unique "fish-scale" structure—built with interlocking stones laid in staggered layers—not only reinforces the embankment but also protects the surrounding ecosystem, with traces of these ancient construction techniques still visible today. One of the famed "Eight Scenic Views of Qingyuan," known as "Misty Rain on the Bei River," lies along this stretch of the river. It once inspired the Qing-dynasty poet Huang Peifang to pause and compose verses, capturing the site’s ethereal beauty in lines like, “Vast misty waves merge into boundless expanse.” Near the riverbank also stand remnants of a Ming-dynasty military encampment used by the famed general Qi Jiguang, whose weathered stone steles silently recount tales of coastal defense history. Today, the embankment blends modern recreational elements—such as cycling paths, waterside viewing platforms, and light shows—creating a vibrant convergence of past and present, making it Qingyuan’s most poetic and dynamic place to dwell amidst nature.
