Luoyang Museum, located in Luoyang—the ancient capital of thirteen dynasties—is a grand institution that brings together China's rich humanistic history and artistic treasures. Housing over 13,000 cultural relics, the museum’s collection highlights include bronze ware, Tang Sancai pottery, and Han dynasty terracotta figurines, collectively tracing the millennia-long trajectory of Chinese civilization.
In the Bronze Gallery, Shang and Zhou dynasty artifacts such as the square ding vessel adorned with taotie motifs and the Western Zhou zun vessel decorated with zoomorphic masks eloquently convey the solemnity of ritual and music culture through their "frozen metal language." Meanwhile, the Tang Sancai Gallery bursts with vibrant glazes, vividly evoking the splendor of the Tang Dynasty. Works like the camel figurines laden with goods and polo-playing horse riders dynamically illustrate the bustling prosperity along the Silk Road.
A special exhibition titled “Art of the Longmen Grottoes” employs 3D reconstruction technology to faithfully recreate the majestic presence of the Vairocana Buddha. In another section, Song dynasty official kiln porcelains display refined ice-crackled glazes that reflect the aesthetic ideals of literati and scholars.
Along the museum’s historical corridor, visitors encounter Empress Wu Zetian’s golden memorial tablet and Han dynasty bamboo slips donated by Zhang Fang, a patriotic general from the Republic of China era—artifacts that allow one to tangibly sense Luoyang’s profound cultural depth as the “Divine Capital.”
As the political and economic center during the Sui and Tang dynasties, Luoyang witnessed Emperor Taizong (Li Shimin) ushering in the golden age of the Zhenguan Reign and nurtured the pinnacle of Buddhist art at the Longmen Grottoes. The museum’s collection is far more than an assembly of objects; it stands as a testament to the inclusive and enduring spirit of Chinese civilization, with each exhibit narrating the ancient legends of the Hetu and Luoshu and the timeless allure of Chinese culture.
