Lao Jun Shan
Laojun Mountain is famed for its "sea of clouds and extraordinary peaks." Its main summit, Laojun Pavilion, stands at an elevation of 2,192 meters and is perpetually shrouded in mist and clouds, resembling a celestial realm. The Golden Summit temple complex clings to the mountainside, where upturned eaves and intricate dougong brackets harmonize beautifully with the lush pine forests. From this vantage point, visitors can gaze down upon rolling seas of cloud that surge like ocean waves, while the rustling pines echo like sacred chants. Winding around the mountain’s waist like a jade ribbon, the Nine-Bend Eighteen-Turn Stream flows gracefully, while Feila Mountain Waterfall plunges dramatically from sheer cliffs, its spray catching the light to create shimmering rainbows. The ruins of Yuxu Palace, dating back to the Tang Dynasty, still preserve an ancient stone stele inscribed with the four powerful characters “Dao Follows Nature” (Dao Fa Zi Ran). Since the Eastern Han Dynasty, this site has been a sacred center of Taoism. Zhang Daoling, a renowned Eastern Han Taoist scholar, once practiced alchemy and cultivation here, leaving behind the legendary "Laojun Cave." During the Tang Dynasty, poets and scholars flocked to the mountain; the celebrated poet Li Bai even composed verses praising it, writing, “Below Laojun Mountain flows the Peach Blossom Stream,” and marveling at its “cloud-shrouded depths, beyond knowing.” The Ming and Qing dynasties saw the height of its religious prosperity, and when Yuxu Palace was rebuilt, master craftsmen from Jiangnan were invited, blending northern and southern architectural styles. Among the mountain’s natural wonders, oddly shaped pines and fantastically sculpted rocks appear as if carved by nature itself. Shisun Peak rises like a blooming lotus, while Dragon’s Ridge Stone winds sinuously like a swimming dragon. At 1,700 meters above sea level, the "Cloud-Trail Skywalk" hangs suspended in midair—walking along it, visitors feel as though they are soaring through the void on the wind. Laojun Mountain is not only a natural spectacle but also a living testament to Taoist cultural heritage. Its temples, steles, and legends together weave a spiritual tapestry embodying the Taoist ideal of “harmony between heaven and humanity,” captivating all who visit.
