Lü Wang Fen He Muqun
The Lu Wang Tomb and Mausoleum Complex, located in Xinxiang City, is the burial site of Zhu Changfang, the Prince of Lu during the late Ming dynasty. The site preserves stone statues, a sacred way (spirit path), and a collection of steles, serving as a living testament to Ming imperial funerary art. Centered around its solemn and majestic tomb architecture, the complex features imposing stone beasts lining both sides of the sacred way—including qilin, pixiu, and ornamental pillars—each vividly carved with vigorous, masterful chiseling that exemplifies the pinnacle of Ming stone sculpture. Within the stele pavilion, fragments of the "Epitaph of the Prince of Lu" remain, recording the life of this regional prince in bold, powerful calligraphy—a valuable historical source for studying late Ming political history. Built against a backdrop of mountains and enveloped in evergreen pines and cypresses, the mausoleum grounds also contain the ruins of an offering hall, a stele corridor, and satellite tombs of those buried alongside the prince. Particularly striking is Zhu Changfang’s symbolic tomb (clothes-and-hat tomb). As the last Ming prince of his line, Zhu Changfang held out in Lu’an Prefecture after Li Zicheng—the leader of the late Ming peasant uprising—captured Beijing. Ultimately, when Qing forces crossed the Great Wall, he chose to die for his cause, making his tomb a poignant witness to the dynastic transition from Ming to Qing. The surrounding burial mounds include those of his consorts and attendants, and their epitaphs bear the inscription “Loyal souls never fade,” echoing the tragic grandeur of that era. More than just a treasure of ancient architectural art, this site encapsulates the turbulence of the late Ming period. When morning mist drifts over the silhouettes of the stone statues, one can almost hear Zhu Changfang’s vow of steadfast loyalty amid chaos—and the inscriptions on the stone steles continue to narrate the twilight and elegy of a fallen dynasty.
