Nan Jian Tower
The Nanjian Pagoda, a majestic testament to Langfang’s ancient heritage, was first constructed during the Yongle era of the Ming Dynasty. Standing proudly in the southern part of Langfang city, this imposing multi-eaved pavilion-style pagoda features thirteen stories with eight sides, its intricate dougong brackets and soaring eaves embodying the masterful craftsmanship and cultural splendor of its time. From the summit, the cityscape of Langfang unfolds like a slowly unrolled scroll—glazed tiles shimmering under sunlight, ancient streets and alleys crisscrossing below—captivating all who gaze upon it. Embedded into the pagoda’s structure is a stone stele inscribed with the “Ode to Langfang,” its vigorous calligraphy resembling writhing dragons, narrating the thousand-year transformation of this pivotal northern town. Inside, the original spiral stone staircase from the Ming Dynasty remains intact. Each level houses painted shrines and Buddhist statues, with the third-floor polychrome sculpture of the Thousand-Armed Guanyin standing out as particularly breathtaking—its gilded surface, though weathered, radiates the vitality of Eastern artistry. Surrounding the pagoda’s base are relics from the Ming and Qing dynasties: ancient wells, stone lions, and a forest of steles. Among them, the Qing-era “Stele Commemorating the Restoration of Nanjian Pagoda” records the touching story of local gentry who generously funded its repairs, their heartfelt devotion to their homeland evident in every character. More than just an architectural treasure, the Nanjian Pagoda is a living fossil of Langfang’s history. During the late Ming and early Qing periods, Li Zicheng—the famed peasant rebellion leader—once stationed his troops beneath the pagoda, plotting his campaign to restore the Ming and resist the Qing. In the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty, Wen Tingshi, a descendant of the Southern Song loyalist Wen Tianxiang, composed a poem here expressing his sentiments, leaving behind the celebrated verse “Pagoda Shadow Slants Across the Sky.” Today, the Nanjian Pagoda stands like a venerable elder who has witnessed centuries of change, silently safeguarding Langfang’s cultural legacy—each upward glance a profound, reverent gaze into the depths of history.
