Xinjiang Wetland Park, located in Shangrao City, Jiangxi Province, is an ecological gem where urban life harmoniously blends with nature. Crisscrossed by waterways and swaying reeds, the park becomes a living canvas of wetland ecology during migratory seasons, as flocks of egrets, grey herons, and night herons circle above the water—a natural theater where “dancers of the sky” intertwine with “poetry of the earth.” At its heart, the park follows the confluence of three rivers, linking together an ecological corridor, wetland boardwalks, and bird-watching platforms. The winding boardwalk meanders through dawn redwood forests, flanked by weeping willows dipping into the water; occasionally, red carp leap from the surface, delighting visitors with serene beauty. Strategically positioned bird-watching platforms offer panoramic views—distant vistas of the meandering Xinjiang River and close-up spectacles of birds taking flight or landing en masse, especially the breathtaking “Thousand Birds Returning to Roost” phenomenon. Within the park also stands an ancient camphor tree over a thousand years old, its broad canopy bearing silent witness to the passage of time. The Xinjiang River, historically known as “Xin Shui,” has been famed since the Eastern Han Dynasty for its hydraulic engineering and has nurtured Shangrao’s unique waterside culture. The Song dynasty literary master Huang Tingjian once praised it with the verse, “Xin River’s waters clear as jade,” while the late Ming painter Chen Hongshou created ink-wash masterpieces inspired by its scenery. As a vital tributary of the Poyang Lake ecosystem, this wetland serves as a crucial stopover for migratory birds and a key conservation area for biodiversity in northeastern Jiangxi. Strolling through the park feels like stepping into a flowing ink-wash scroll—alive with nature’s vibrant energy and imbued with millennia of cultural heritage, offering urban dwellers a poetic sanctuary to reconnect with the natural world.
