Lao Wai Tan
A Hundred-Year Old Foreigner’s Bank Street, featuring a unique charm blending a collection of Western buildings with Huangju (Yellow Wine) culture. Located along the banks of the Yong River, the 21 historic buildings are a testament to the architectural wisdom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with Gothic spires, Baroque carvings, and Roman columns reflecting in the brick and tile. Huangju culture has been revitalized here, with traditional brewing techniques and modern light shows creating a dreamy illusion. At night, the river reflects the neon lights, resembling a flowing river of stars. Key attractions include the former site of the British Consulate, the French Chamber of Commerce building, and the former site of the German Hospital. Each building bears the imprint of Ningbo’s opening history. The Huangju Museum showcases the thousand-year-old brewing process through immersive experiences, with the aroma and historical atmosphere intertwined. Adjacent to Tianyi Pavilion, the creative market blends traditional and modern art, with handmade Huangju, woodblock printing, and other intangible cultural heritage techniques attracting visitors from all over. This land was the starting point of the Ningbo Merchant Group’s rise. Merchants such as Yan Ziju (an early representative of the Ningbo Merchant Group) opened up new trade routes here, promoting deep cultural exchange between East and West. Lao Wai Tan is not only a model for the revitalization of architectural heritage but also a tangible presentation of Ningbo’s “Maritime Silk Road Culture” and “Yong Merchants’ Spirit,” allowing history and contemporary life to resonate together on the river breeze.
