Dongqian Lake
Dongqian Lake, a brilliant pearl west of Ningbo, skillfully combines landscape paintings with a thousand-year cultural heritage. With vast, shimmering waters reflecting the emerald peaks of the Four Ming Mountains, and particularly stunning in misty rain, a boat trip on the lake feels like stepping into a Song Dynasty poem. Three mountains stand proudly in the center, the chanting from the Small Putuo Temple and the ringing bells of Bao Lin Temple carried on the wind, creating a harmonious blend of ancient temple architecture and lakeside scenery, providing a refreshing and serene experience. The winding West Lake Road along the lake connects to “Zhe Dong’s First Lake” as described by Xi Xia Ke, with Song Dynasty officials Wen Tianxiang’s inscribed stone carvings visible along the way, their characters sharp and powerful, cutting through the passage of time. The Guishan Island’s Shakyamuni Temple, dating back to the Tang Dynasty, has been a site of pilgrimage for a thousand years, with monks often reciting scriptures beneath ancient Ginkgo trees, the lingering chants evoking the splendor of the Tang Dynasty. In spring, willows gently brush the banks, and in autumn, plum blossoms fall like snow, offering different scenes in each season, most famously known for “Qian Hu Yue Se” (Money Lake Moonlight), where moonlight spills across the lake like scattered silver, captivating the heart. As an important node on Zhejiang’s cultural corridor, Dongqian Lake is not only a natural wonder but also a place where history and culture converge. Ancient sites and legends intertwine, each scene carrying a thousand-year story, inviting visitors to linger and experience the poetic and tranquil Eastern aesthetic.
