Wei Haiwei Old City
Weihaiwei Old Town, a frozen epic of Ming-Qing coastal defense, recounts the iron-blooded glory of centuries-old maritime fortification through its weathered textures of gray tiles and aged blue bricks. Its undulating city walls coil like a giant dragon, while remnants of artillery batteries and the moat together form a multi-layered defensive system—each brick etched with resolute determination against foreign aggression. The ancient cypress trees at the Wen Tianxiang Memorial Temple—honoring the famed Southern Song general who resisted the Yuan dynasty—stand evergreen, bearing witness to the enduring spirit of national integrity. Inside the Coastal Defense Museum, silent bronze cannons poignantly narrate the tragic heroism of the First Sino-Japanese War. At the heart of the scenic area, the Zhonggu Tower—the Ming dynasty’s military command center—retains its original sweeping eaves and intricate bracketing. Climbing to its summit offers a panoramic view over the entire town, evoking the watchful perspective of ancient beacon towers. Within the barbican of the West Gate stands a Ming-era arrow tower, its surviving arrow slits still seeming to carry traces of gunpowder smoke, while an ancient stone bridge by the moat connects past and present. As a crucial northern coastal stronghold during the Ming and Qing dynasties, Weihaiwei once served as a strategic military base for Zheng Chenggong’s (Koxinga) northern expedition against the Qing and later became the command headquarters for Admiral Ding Ruchang of the late Qing Beiyang Fleet during the Battle of the Yalu River. More than just a fortress, it was also a vital chokepoint along the Maritime Silk Road. Its defensive architecture uniquely blends Central Plains construction wisdom with maritime military technology, embodying the indomitable spirit of Chinese civilization. As sea breezes sweep across the time-worn ramparts, echoes of history seem to linger—testifying to the enduring love for country and home that has thrived on this land through the ages.
