Sun Island Scenic Area, located on the Songhua River in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, is one of China’s most iconic tourist destinations, especially celebrated for its annual Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival. The island offers a year-round experience: in winter, it transforms into a magical wonderland of massive ice carvings, illuminated by colorful lights; in summer, it becomes a verdant oasis with parks, lakes, and walking trails ideal for relaxation. Originally developed in the 1950s as a riverside recreation zone, Sun Island gained international fame after hosting the first ice festival in 1999. Its rich cultural heritage includes traditional Manchu influences and modern artistic expressions through sculpture and performance. Visitors are advised to plan trips during winter (December–February) for the full festival experience or in late spring to early autumn for scenic walks and outdoor activities. The island also features museums, themed gardens, and local cuisine, making it a hub for both leisure and cultural immersion.
