The Jinshanling Great Wall winds along the northern bank of the Luan River in Chengde, one of the most exquisite sections of the Ming Great Wall. The ridge resembles a leaping dragon, with watchtowers and fortresses scattered among the verdant mountains, perfectly blending military defense and natural beauty. Ascending to the summit of Huayu Ridge, you can overlook a 15-kilometer section of the Great Wall snaking through the mountains, while the intricate battlements of the watchtowers and fortresses still retain the wisdom of Ming Dynasty craftsmen, and the “boundary stones” at the Boundary Stone Tower witness the frontier’s boundaries. Xiwang Tower is unique with its “statues of female officers on the roof,” and the moss-covered battlements tell of more than 400 years of wind and frost. The wild Great Wall section within the scenic area is particularly stunning, with wildflowers covering the ruins, as if time has solidified here.
