Pingyao City Wall
Pingyao City Wall is the best-preserved ancient county city wall in China, dating back to the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, continuously repaired and expanded during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It stands at 12 meters high and spans 6.4 kilometers, showcasing a timeless grandeur through its brick and rammed earth construction. The wall winds and curves like a turtle, with north-facing towers resembling the turtle's head and the south-facing moat resembling the turtle's tail. The east and west gates are sturdy and reliable, reflecting ancient Feng Shui principles. Climbing the wall offers a panoramic view of the city, with historic streets resembling a chessboard and a vibrant mix of shops and residences. The remnants of Ming and Qing merchant guilds and money exchange offices are still visible. The “Ying Xuan Men” (Welcome Wind Gate) is the main entrance to the moat, with imposing arrow towers and a flowing defensive river. The “Gong Ji Men” (Arch-Pole Gate) towers above, offering a distant view of the Jinzhong Plain. Ancient buildings such as the Temple of Literature, the county government offices, and the Ri Sheng Chang money exchange office are clustered around the wall, telling the story of the prosperity of Jin merchants. The wall’s crenellations are dotted with watchtowers and arrow slits, representing a classic example of ancient military engineering. This wall, carrying a thousand-year-old civilization, witnessed the heroic restoration efforts of Qiao Zhiyuan and the investigative footsteps of Shen Kuo. The wall is not just a defensive structure, but a three-dimensional epic of Chinese wisdom, with each brick inscribed with the cultural code of “Harmony between Heaven and Man,” inviting visitors to contemplate history’s weight and eternity.
