As a symbol of Nanning’s civic spirit, Liberation Square embodies the city's historical depth and contemporary vitality through its architectural ensemble that blends solemnity with dynamism. At the heart of the square stands the 36-meter-tall "Nanning Liberation Memorial Tower," whose surface is adorned with narrative reliefs commemorating the liberation of Guangxi on December 11, 1949. Atop the tower, a bronze torch catches the sunlight, casting an eternal glow that symbolizes the enduring flame of revolution. Encircling the square, the "Baise Uprising Sculpture Group" realistically depicts the heroic days when Deng Xiaoping—chief architect of China’s reform and opening-up—and Zhang Yunyi—a senior general of the People’s Liberation Army—led the Red Army in breaking through enemy encirclements. The figures’ expressions are frozen in time, conveying both unwavering resolve and poignant sacrifice. In the southeast corner of the square, the Guangxi Revolutionary Memorial Hall uses holographic projection technology to recreate the scene of Huang Rikui—an early member of the Chinese Communist Party—planning an uprising in Nanning. Displayed in glass cases, yellowed special editions of the Guangxi Daily bear witness to the surging tide of the May 1, 1947 anti-civil war movement. At night, the "Light of Liberation" sculpture ensemble illuminates the square. Composed of seven bronze elements, it subtly alludes to the revolutionary victory achieved under the leadership of the Seventh Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party. Spanning 128,000 square meters, this memorial site not only mirrors Nanning’s urban renewal but also stands as an everlasting monument to the people of Guangxi’s pursuit of liberation. Embedded in the plaza’s pavement are 288 granite tiles—each a vivid, indelible imprint of revolutionary history, inscribed with the collective memory and spiritual totem of this city.
