Tiantan
Tiantan is a sacred place for imperial prayers, located south of Beijing. It showcases the magnificent ancient Chinese astronomical architecture, renowned for its ingenuity. The core complex includes Jinyan Dian, Huangqiu Tan, Huangxunguyi, and Zaigong, arranged according to the “Heaven and Earth” concept, expressed through axial symmetry and hierarchical progression. Jinyan Dian is a pinnacle of architectural art, with its triple blue-tiled and gilded roof resembling a crown, and 28 golden pillars symbolizing the Twenty-Eight Constellations. Huangqiu Tan features nine ascending circular platforms, each decreasing in diameter, representing “Nine Heavens.” Huangxunguyi’s circular walls and echo wall create an acoustic marvel, allowing whispers to travel to the opposite wall. Zaigong is hidden among the trees with blue brick and gray tile, embodying the harmony between heaven and earth. This imperial altar embodies China’s agricultural civilization’s reverence for celestial phenomena.
