Huanggang Library
Located at the southern foot of the Dabie Mountains, Huanggang City Library is a landmark cultural institution representing the humanistic spirit of eastern Hubei. Centered on the core concept of "Cultural Heritage Continuity," the library creates an immersive cultural space. Its digital reading area features holographic projections and AI-powered smart bookshelves, allowing readers to trigger three-dimensional reconstructions of ancient texts simply by touching physical pages. The children’s reading room houses an interactive poetry theater, where light-and-shadow installations bring classic works—such as Su Shi’s “Hanshi Poem Composed in Huangzhou”—to life. The rare-books section preserves precious Ming- and Qing-era woodblock editions of the *Collected Works of Su Shi* and replica manuscripts of Li Shizhen (a renowned Ming-dynasty physician). In the woodblock printing experience zone, visitors can personally make rubbings from surviving fragments of the *Gazetteer of Huangzhou Prefecture*. In the central atrium stands the "Three Sus Cultural Wall," a bas-relief depicting scenes from Su Shi’s (a celebrated Northern Song literary master) exile in Huangzhou—including the origin of the famed Dongpo Pork and the creation of his masterpiece “Niannujiao: Lamenting the Past at Red Cliff.” Embedded into the floor is a star chart subtly echoing Su Shi’s philosophical reflection: “Like mayflies adrift between heaven and earth.” On the top floor, a dedicated “General Li Xiannian Memorial Hall” (honoring the revolutionary leader) displays his handwritten *Ode to Huanggang* alongside historical revolutionary artifacts. The building’s exterior blends architectural elements of the ancient Chu state, with upturned eaves adorned with brick carvings of lyrics from Huangmei opera. At nightfall, LED light strips trace the contours of “Eastern Cultural Lineage,” transforming millennia of literary heritage into a luminous, tactile poem.
