Located in the heart of Central China, Zhumadian Museum is positioned as “a living memory of Central Plains civilization.” Its collection comprises over a thousand artifacts spanning from the Neolithic Age to modern times, forming a three-dimensional chronicle of Central Plains culture. In the Bronze Gallery, the square ding vessel adorned with taotie motifs reflects the splendor of Shang and Zhou ritual and music civilization; groups of Han dynasty pottery figurines vividly recreate the grandeur of the Han era; and shards of Song dynasty Jun ware preserve the timeless elegance of Ru kiln’s sky-blue glaze. The specially curated “Agricultural Civilization of the Central Plains” exhibition juxtaposes ancient farming tools—such as bone sickles and stone plows—with the classical agricultural text Qimin Yaoshu, illustrating the profound dialogue between ancestral wisdom and the land. The museum’s “Digital Silk Road” interactive zone employs VR technology to transport visitors into the epic scenes of Zhang Qian’s [a Western Han diplomat] missions to the Western Regions. In the “Cultural Continuity” display case, fragments of the Ming dynasty Yongle Encyclopedia engage in a transcendent dialogue with contemporary calligraphers’ reproductions, embodying the eternal transmission of cultural DNA. As a vital witness to Central Plains civilization, the museum not only safeguards the legacy of the Neolithic Peiligang culture but also uses taotie patterns on Chu-state bronzes to depict the magnificent convergence of Chu culture and Central Plains civilization. Here, every artifact is a millennia-old cipher, awaiting a conversation across time with each visitor.
