Wenfeng Pagoda stands atop Wenfeng Mountain in Xinyang. Built during the Ming Dynasty as a multi-eaved brick pagoda, it features nine tiers of upturned eaves resembling the outstretched wings of a pheasant soaring into the sky. Its body, constructed of bluish-gray bricks and roofed with gray tiles, is adorned with intricately arranged dougong brackets, showcasing the ingenuity of ancient Chinese architecture. From the summit, one can gaze upon the Shi River winding around the mountainside like a jade-green sash, while the city below unfolds in orderly rows of rooftops; amidst rising clouds and mist, the millennium-old cultural heritage of Xinyang lies fully revealed.
Inside the pagoda, a spiral staircase conceals subtle intricacies. Each level houses Buddhist niches and colorful murals depicting classical tales such as "Lofty Wenfeng Pagoda" and "The Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea," their shifting light and shadow silently narrating the passage of time.
Ancient cypress trees surround the pagoda’s base, their gnarled branches lush and verdant, harmonizing with the structure to embody the unity of heaven and humanity. To the east lies the ruins of Wenfeng Academy, once a major center of education in Xinyang; Li Hongzhang—a prominent late-Qing statesman and jinshi-degree holder—once lectured here, leaving behind the stone inscription "Wenfeng Zhizhi" ("Wenfeng Points Straight Upward"). On the western side, an observation platform offers distant views of the Dabie Mountains’ foothills, where mist-shrouded peaks seem to harbor immortal hermits, inspiring countless poets through the ages.
Originally erected to stabilize local feng shui, the pagoda was built during the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty (1522–1566) to suppress mountain floods, according to the *Xinyang Prefecture Gazetteer*. Over time, it became a symbol of flourishing literary fortune. Legend holds that the copper bells atop the pagoda, tinkling in the wind, grant wishes for scholarly success. At sunset, the pagoda’s shadow stretches across the Shi River like a colossal brush pointing toward the heavens—an image perfectly captured by the ancient verse:
