Chêngtiān Sì Tǎ
The Chengtian Temple Pagoda stands tall in Xingqing District, Yinchuan, and is one of the most renowned ancient pagodas in the "Jiangnan of the Frontier" region. With its nine-story pavilion-style structure, the pagoda features elegant grey bricks and tiles complemented by exquisite boxwood carvings. Its upturned eaves and intricate dougong brackets shimmer with reflected light, and from its summit, visitors can take in panoramic views of the Helan Mountains, the Yellow River, and the city skyline. At nightfall, the glazed tiles of the pagoda refract a starry glow, mirroring the riverside lanterns in the Yellow River below—creating an ethereal vision as if the Milky Way had poured down into the mortal world. Inside the pagoda, a spiral staircase leads to viewing platforms on each level, adorned with colorful murals depicting Buddhist tales and scenes from the Silk Road. The temple courtyard is graced with ancient, verdant cypress trees and numerous stone steles, among which the Ming-dynasty stone plaque inscribed with “Jiangnan of the Frontier” by Zhang Yong, then-governor of Ningxia, is especially prominent. Excavations at the pagoda’s foundation have unearthed Tangut-script sutras and a Song-dynasty bronze Buddha statue, testifying to this site’s millennium-long role as a vital stop along the Silk Road. Originally built during the Northern Song dynasty, this historic pagoda was once a favorite destination for poets and scholars seeking inspiration amid ancient ruins. The great Northern Song literary master Su Shi once composed here the famous verse, “The pagoda’s shadow slants across the sky, as if about to sweep falling stars away.” Later, the Qing-dynasty poet Nalan Xingde likened its silhouette to “the foremost peak of Jiangnan beyond the Great Wall.” The copper bells atop the pagoda chime softly in the wind, echoing centuries of camel bells from passing caravans and the poetic musings of generations past.
