Nestled in the northern outskirts of Xining, Beishan National Forest Park is a rare emerald oasis on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Here, mountains and verdant valleys interweave in harmonious splendor: in spring, seas of rhododendrons bloom like fiery clouds; in autumn, forests blaze in layers of vibrant hues. From the summit, visitors can take in panoramic views of Xining city and the Huangshui River Valley—a sight that refreshes the spirit and soothes the soul.
Within the park, the "Rhododendron Valley" dazzles with millions of rhododendron bushes forming billowing pink clouds during blooming season, drawing throngs of visitors while butterflies and bees flutter gracefully among the blossoms. Perched at 2,200 meters above sea level, the "Viewing Platform" offers a full 360-degree vista of the city and surrounding mountains—especially ethereal at dawn when mist swirls around the peaks, evoking a fairyland.
Winding through the hills, an ancient trail preserves remnants of the Ming-Qing-era Tea Horse Road. Along its flagstone path, scholars once left inscriptions; among them stands the stone tablet bearing the phrase “Clouds Across the Qinling Mountains,” calligraphed by Zhang Mu, a renowned Qing-dynasty scholar, its bold strokes echoing the mountain’s storied past.
Since ancient times, Beishan has served as a strategic military stronghold. During the Han dynasty, the famed general Huo Qubing stationed troops here to cultivate land and defend the frontier, leaving behind legends of garrison life at the foot of the Qilian Mountains. Built into the mountainside, the Tibetan Buddhist Beishan Temple blends soaring eaves and intricate brackets with dramatic rock formations. Its interior murals depict scenes from the Epic of King Gesar, narrating the faith and wisdom of the plateau’s peoples.
Year-round, the “Dragon Pool Waterfall” murmurs gently through the ravine. Legend holds that it originated from the hoofprint of Princess Wencheng—the Tang dynasty princess who journeyed westward in a royal marriage alliance—imbuing the landscape with mythical grace.
Beishan is both a natural masterpiece and a living chronicle of history. Every vista bears the imprint of time, inviting travelers to wander slowly and savor its layered stories.
