Baizi Bridge, the oldest existing stone arch bridge in Jiangnan, built during the Southern Song Dynasty, harmoniously combining its unique “eight characters” arch shape with the elegant water town. The bridge body is constructed with stone rubble, and the bridge deck is paved with blue stone slabs. The piers cleverly utilize the principle of water flow whirlpools, and it remains solid as ever after a thousand years. The archway sides have stone railings with lotus carvings, reflecting the Xiaoshan “Lotus City” imagery, and the river channel below winds like a silk ribbon, reflecting the dark tile white walls on both sides, like a flowing ink wash painting.
